Moving towards the life you desire sometimes takes small steps that can seem huge without help. Our Portsmouth Adult Education Program provides quality classroom-based instruction for adults in need of improving basic skills for new or better jobs, or to enter college or certificate programs. We work with enrolled students in a variety of classes in high school equivalency, career skills and building English language skills.

Our counselors assist each adult by defining goals related to family, employment and post-secondary education and then support them through classes to reach those goals. Instruction is focused on each individual student’s interested and needs and will proceed at the student’s pace.

Through our Portsmouth Adult Education program, enrolled students have access to:

  • Basic computer skills training
  • Employment & training resources
  • Career & college planning services
  • HiSET Test Preparation (previously known as GED) to showcase high school equivalency for those who did not receive a diploma

In addition to high school equivalency and career skills, we provide classes in Portsmouth designed for speakers of other languages to increase their English language skills (ESOL classes). These classes have two levels that focus on the basic life skills needed to function day-to-day in English-speaking environments. We will practice language skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing.

We want to make basic education more accessible for those in need. Classes are available for days or evenings with flexibility to fit your schedule and students can join classes at any time during the year. The Portsmouth City Trolley system drops off at the building where classes are held.
